The Raspberry Pi 5 has a lot of fun new expansion options. One of them is an AI kit. Running an AI model usually requires a lot of compute, which is why GPUs are typically used. For consumers or small businesses it often isn't worth setting up your own AI server.
The Raspberry Pi has long had a reputation for running big projects with limited hardware. The entire setup fits in roughly 10 × 7 × 4 cm. The AI kit still isn't comparable to the massive data centres behind ChatGPT and similar services, but it's very possible to run your own AI server. I use a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM, an M.2 HAT+, and the Hailo-8L M.2 Entry-Level Acceleration Module.
It really gets fun with a camera attached, because the Hailo-8L can process the video feed. That makes it great for face recognition, licence-plate recognition, or use as a smart security camera. Useful applications include counting visitors in a shop or monitoring specific objects.
